Hi, everyone!
On Ground Hog Day, I was still asleep when Grandma got me up to look for my shadow. I didn’t see it!
Even when I looked in another place, no shadow! So I guess Kauai is going to have a short winter!

It was very windy on Ground Hog Day! When I went to the beach, sand was blowing around! Most of the overnight sea turtles decided not to go back into the surf. I didn’t blame them! On my way back from the beach, I said hello to my shell ginger friends. We had a big rainstorm in the afternoon and no sunset.

On Tuesday, the sun was back out. I could definitely see my shadow when I went to the beach! There weren’t as many sea turtles sleeping in.

My favorite monk seal protector was on the other end of the beach. There weren’t any monk seals on the beach, but there were three of them playing in the surf. One of them looked like it was coming out on the far end of the beach, so Steve-san walked down to set out signs. Then the seal changed its mind! Another seal decided to join the water exercise class! Steve-san had to hurry back to our end of the beach when a seal decided to come ashore right where Grandma and I were standing! Good thing everybody knew to give the seal space! I checked out the native site fish pond on the way back, but there were no nenes.

Grandma and I drove into Lihue to meet my favorite haku and lei maker, Elvrine-san. She was at a workshop for Kauaians who make local products, and she gave me a Kauai button to wear. Guess what? Elvrine-san visited Iceland last year, too! She made leis out of lupine blossoms! On our way back from seeing Elvrine-san, we picked up lunch at Dim ‘N Den Sum. So I got to see Lynelle-san, too! The dim sum was delicious!

On Wednesday, there was one sea turtle napping on the beach, but no monk seals in sight. I did see my first whale of the trip! Uncle David arrived from Washington state at dinner time.

Today, Grandma and I took Uncle David on beach patrol with us. On the way I said hello to a strelitzia friend. There was only one sea turtle on the beach and no monk seal.

Grandma and I wanted to show Uncle David the native village site. That has been improved since his last visit to Kauai. We saw two nenes at the fish pond. Then we walked up to the royal observatory. The sun’s shadows on the tikis made a map of how to reach the other Pacific Island groups! Lots of important shadows, just none on Ground Hog Day!

Love,
Lion-san
