Following the Flowers!

Hi, everyone!

In May, we had much more rain and more cold weather than usual. Many of my flower friends waited longer than last year to bloom, but the blossoms lasted longer!

Because some of my flower friends were slowpokes, it’s taken longer for me to see them all! Right after I wrote last time, the next set of my Fairport flower friends started blooming.

On Memorial Day, Grandma took me to the parade in Fairport. I always like to see the fire trucks! Uncle Steven’s old Cub Scout pack marched too! The high school band that he and Uncle Bill played in didn’t march, but they did play for the ceremony afterward.

We went back out to the bay after the parade in town. Some of my azalea friends there were in full bloom!

The next day was still nice weather! After we came back into town, Grandma took me back to Highland Park! We expected the lilacs to be done blooming and the pink buckeye buds and rhododendrons to be opening up. The peonies were in full bloom. The pink buckeye flower buds still weren’t open! Some of the lilacs hadn’t opened their flower buds, either!

I saw a sign that looked like it was part of a park exploration game. The weather was warm enough that a groundhog popped out of its burrow to say hello to me and the sun. When we got to the rhododendron valley, there were still a lot of bushes with tight green flower buds. Grandma promised to bring me back again to see them in bloom!

Last week, we had the choir picnic in town! It turned out to be a birthday party, too! My friend LaVache came with her grandma, and we had a good time together. My Fairport rhododendron friend was in full bloom right in time for the party! The deer ate all its leaves off two winters ago, so I’m really happy to see it blooming again!

Grandpa has started a new project! He’s replacing one of our outside doors in Fairport with a wider one. That will make it easier for our friends to get in and out! Grandma has the new one all painted and waiting in the garage.

The last two days we’ve finally had summer weather! Yesterday Grandma took me back to see the rest of my flower friends in Highland Park. On my way to see the pink buckeye, I made friends with a Kelsey locust, a big rose bush, one of my favorite maple trees, and a tulip tree blossom low enough for me to see! The pink buckeye buds still hadn’t opened, even though the white buckeye right next to it was past full bloom! Some of the unopened pink buds were scattered on the ground! I don’t know if any of them are ever going to open!

There were some lilacs that were just getting around to blooming and some bushes that were fully covered with open blooms. We met another groundhog. I knew to be quiet and give him space! I saw another sign from the discovery game. Then I made friends with an oriental fringe tree in bloom.

When we got to the rhododendron valley, a lot more of my rhodie friends were blooming! I made friends as we walked up the valley, and more friends on the ridge and where the paths meet.

Today is supposed to be the warmest day of the year so far. If that doesn’t help the pink buckeye flower buds to open, I don’t know what will!

Love,

Lion-san
